Thomas Corr was employed as a maintenance man by the defendants, IBC Vehicles Ltd. He suffered a personal injury accident on the 22 June 1996 when a prototype press line that he was working on was, without warning, operated and a robot arm, which had picked up a panel to be pressed, shot out of the press. In a frightening and lifethreatening event, the panel struck Mr Corr in the ear. It was accepted that had Mr Corr not instinctively moved his head, he could quite easily have been decapitated.
